No matter what your level of experience is with kayaking, we want you to know that both rivers are easy-to-access and provide lots of fun for everyone at your party.
There are many rental services for tubes, and kayaks and those service includes shuttle service also. So, if you don’t have kayaks and don’t have any paddling experiences before, no need to worry about these issues. Everything is ready there for you and this river is a very beginner-friendly for kayaking.
Rainbow River kayak launch
There is a new policy that says that you have to rent tubes from the renters. but if you want to bring your kayak, you can. But still, you have to pay for them.
You can launch your kayak from the KP Hole area. In that area, you have to pay 7 dollars per person to park and launch a kayak. Policies change from time to time. So, if they allow your own kayak then it is excellent if not then you have to pay for it. Check for any updates or notices.
Rainbow River kayaking schedule
The rainbow river kayaking is open to all throughout the year. You can do kayaking, tubing, etc. in that area. KP Hole Park is one of the famous launching areas among tourists.
This park opens at 8 AM and closes at 8 PM during the summer season. In winter it closes at 5 PM. Winter time starts from October 1 to March 31
Rainbow River Spring kayaking distance
Starting from the KP Hole area it is about 2 miles away. If you paddle through this path, you may require about 2 hours to reach the headspring area.
After reaching the headspring you have to park your kayak in the kayak parking area that is around 1800 feet before the designated swimming area or headspring.
For parking/porting your kayak you have to pay 2 dollars per kayak. This could be changed but in our time we had to pay that amount.
Rainbow River kayaking with a tour group
If you are looking for an easy way to explore the Rainbow River, then you should consider joining a tour group. Tour groups are usually held by local residents who have been kayaking in this area for years and can provide information about where to go, what to see and how best to enjoy yourself while there.
If you decide not to join a tour group but still want someone else along with you on your journey downriver, there are several options available:
- Renting from one of our local shops – There may be times when we don’t have enough boats available for everyone who wants them (and we apologize if this happens). However, most shops will allow walk-ins without an appointment so long as they’re not full! We recommend calling ahead if possible so that staff knows what kind of experience level each customer has before booking space into their boat(s).
What is allowed /not allowed?
At the KP Hole Park area, you cannot carry your own tubes but you can carry your kayak. You are not allowed to carry any disposable items like a water bottle, any food package, etc.
But you can carry your reusable water container with you. This is strictly maintained for keeping the ecosystem clean and environment friendly. We appreciate this approach.
Rainbow River kayaking requires zero experience
The Rainbow River is a wonderful place to go kayaking. There are no rapids, so you don’t need a lot of experience. You can go with a tour group and they will teach you everything that you need to know. They’ll even bring cold bottled water and snacks!
If you’re looking for more challenging rapids than what the tour company offers, then try continuing on the Withlacoochee River system further north in Florida where there are plenty more opportunities for adventures like this one!
Rainbow River Kayaking + Withlacoochee River Kayaking
If you want to kayak farther, you can continue on the Withlacoochee River. The Withlacoochee is a tributary of the Suwannee River and it’s home to some excellent rapids. This section of the river is popular with kayakers because it offers more opportunities for adventure than most other areas in Florida.
Are there any gators or snakes?
During our visit, we did not see any gators there but I heard from some people about the gators and snakes. It is very unlikely to see such creatures since the Rainbow River and its spring area are covered with tourists most of the time. So, gators and snakes do not like to confront humans.
If you see them and don’t try to interrupt them, then no need to worry about gators. Some people show their idiot behavior toward them and vex them. Hence they fall into hazard. Let the nature be there.
What are the cautions to follow?
The Rainbow River is not shallow. So, if you don’t know how to swim, be cautious. Your foot may not find the ground. It is 8 to 10 feet deep in the spring area.
Wear a PFD whether you are a swimmer or non-swimmer. If you are doing snorkeling, keep in mind that reaching the spring area requires much energy. You should take the shoreline because there are many motor boaters who may not notice you.
